Role: Co-Editor
Job 1: Idea Creation
Within this role, the entire team, including myself came up with a variety of ideas for the short film, including a crime drama set in an interrogation room, a musician going from being homeless to getting a music deal and a documentary style based on the five parts of grief. The final idea that was settled on was an interrogation between two characters.
Job 2: Plot Design
This role was mainly for the director and producer, however it was simply easier to get a wider range of plot points for the short film so that they could pick the best ones and the ones that made the most sense. After the plot was thought about and finalised, the storyboards and script came into being designed and written up. The plot made sense with the initial idea and the final idea didn't stretch too far from the initial idea. The reason for this is it would've been almost a totally different idea if the plot was changed too much.
Job 3: Script Writing
During the creation of the storyboards the Producer and I worked along side the rest of the production team to create a script that not only made sense, but followed the plot as it should've. This made it easier to edit in the later parts of production so that whilst editing there was a comprehensive narrative within the edit.
As the co-editor, it is very important to know what files are what when editing. Therefore, all the files should be re-named to something that the editors are going to know and make it much easier for them to edit as a whole. The files were re-named to which Shot number and what Take of that shot the video file was. There was also a shot list that was created so that we knew when filming what type of shots we were going to shoot, then how long that shot is roughly going to be.
Job 5: Editing
Editing all the footage together was done by another person in our group, with the suggestions and guidance from myself. The reason for having a co-editor along side the main editor was because as a group we felt it would be easier to complete when there was more people giving the extra help and their alternate ideas when editing the footage together. The program used was Adobe Premiere Pro. The reason for this is it is the most well known program that both of us have used, therefore our editing is going to take less time and make it much easier to work on. Multiple rough edits were created, however the final edit had more cuts, more professional ways of editing. The final edit was about 1 minute 45 seconds. The final edit is completely in black and white and the reasoning for this is because it felt more right when during an interrogation. The mood and tension in the room s so dull and high that giving it colour would make it too energetic. Therefore, having it fully black and white makes the scene more tense and fit better with the idea of being in an interrogation room. My suggestion as a co-editor was to have the audio appear before the video before some shots, this gives it a more professional look when watching and listening to the final thing. Also, I suggested adding black bars along the top and bottom of the screen to make it more intense and more as if it was a cinematic type of short.
